Five years ago, a
documentary titled Café con Leche
gave a face to an emerging group of Cuban-Americans who came to
be known as "Generation ñ." Now, director Joe Cardona
digs deeper into the Cuban-American Mosaic with this follow up to
the acclaimed 1997 documentary.
While Café con Leche revealed
a generation coming to grips with its identity, Café
con Leche 2, helps dispel
some of the myths by examining events and conditions surrounding
Cuban-Americans today. Difficult issues such as travel to Cuba,
Cuban artists performing in Miami and the Elian Gonzalez episode,
are fairly presented in order to contextualize today’s Cuban-American
reality.
Concerned with what he terms as “lack of depth
in coverage” of the Cuban community, Cardona set out to show
the tapestry that depicts exiles today. A WPBT production, Café
con Leche 2 examines varying tonalities of opinions
as a cross section of Cuban-Americans (male, female, black, white,
straight, gay, marielitos, balseros, and those
born on U.S. soil) address many of this community’s “controversial”
issues.
In the end, Cardona says he wound up with a “gumbo
of Cubania” (Cubanity), the Cuban Miami he’s lived in
nearly his entire life. Interviews conducted with Cuban- Americans
such as Jorge Mursuli, Lissette Mendez, Salvador Longoria, Liz Balmaseda,
Tomas Diaz, Raul Martinez, rapper Pitbull and Omar Lopez-Montenegro
illustrate with great candor the thoughts and sentiments of Cuban-Americans
as they attempt to make sense of the past and look ahead to the
future.
Joe Cardona, the director
of acclaimed documentaries, such as ¿Adiós Patria?,
Café con Leche, Havana:Portrait
of Yesteryear, The
Flight of Pedro Pan, Nuestra Risa and José
Martí: Legacy of Freedom, produced and directed Café
con Leche 2.
In the last several years, Channel
