Steve Gushée, Celebrates 10 Years as Host of Viewpoint

For over three decades, WPBT2’s Viewpoint has brought various religious leaders and scholars together for discussions on topics of religious, moral and ethical importance to both South Florida and the world. Episodes air on the last Sunday of the month at noon on WPBT2.

The goal of this monthly religion roundtable program is to provide a means by which the numerous religions of our community can come together to openly discuss timely and vital issues.

As communities grow and diversify, faith becomes an increasingly significant factor, and each religion offers a unique solution to the concerns of the community. How do today’s young adults view religion and spirituality? Is religion hampering science? Who hates in the name of God?

In his 10th year as host of Viewpoint, Steve Gushée, leads the attempt to answer these and other questions in an effort to foster communication within the community and help educate viewers on different points of view.

Steve Gushée has been an Episcopal clergyman for more than 40 years. He was born and raised in Detroit, served at St. Peter’s Church in Cheshire, Connecticut and as rector of Trinity Church in Newtown, Connecticut. He served as Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Hartford, Connecticut for nearly 13 years.

As Dean, he was responsible for both the work of an inner city church and minding the official seat of the Episcopal bishop in the state.

Gushée served a Florida parish as senior associate from 1991 to 1994 and was the religion writer for the Palm Beach Post for five years until July 1999. Thereafter, he wrote a weekly opinion column called, “On Religion,” for the Post until 2008.

He graduated from Kent School in Connecticut, Brown University in Rhode Island and the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has studied at St. George’s College in Jerusalem, the Virginia Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia and Hartford Seminary in Connecticut. He was a canon to St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Aberdeen, Scotland for 10 years and served as a member and, at times, director, of a number of social service organizations and inner city agencies.

Gushée also served as a line officer in the regular U.S. Navy for three years and was health underwriter for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company before entering seminary. He and his wife, Mary Coakley, live in West Palm Beach. They have three children and six granddaughters.
