To celebrate the Fourth, we assembled programs that celebrate American. Shore Things takes a look at America’s vacation-at-the-beach culture. A Hot Dog Program is an all-American celebration of what may be the country’s most popular food. Great Old Amusement Parks celebrates these pre-Disney parks, visiting Playland in Rye, New York; Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana; and California’s Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

A Capitol Fourth
This July 4th, America’s national Independence Day celebration will mark 30 spectacular years on air. The multi-award winning A CAPITOL FOURTH, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the United States Capitol, will kick off the country’s 234th birthday with a musical extravaganza like no other, topped off by the most dazzling display of fireworks anywhere in the nation!

Around the World in 20 Years
Michael Palin goes in search of the crew of the wooden dhow Al Shama, featured in his hit documentary series Around the World in 80 Days. The eight-day voyage across the Arabian Sea to Bombay filmed twenty years ago has become a TV classic. His search begins in Dubai, which has been transformed since he was last there in 1988.

Ringo Starr
In the Egyptian wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Artists Den hosted a once-in-a-lifetime concert pairing music legend Ringo Starr with modern folk-funk master Ben Harper and Relentless7. As an added surprise, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne sang backing vocals on selected songs, including “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

BREAKFAST SPECIAL is a celebration of going out for a morning meal in America. Rick Sebak visits interesting and unusual breakfast spots, from a Cuban cafe in downtown St. Augustine to a mid-western eatery in a shopping center outside Columbus, Ohio. He lets viewers sample pancakes in rural New York state, try loco moco in Hilo, Hawaii, and see what's cooking at the Tin Shed in Portland, Oregon. There’s more to breakfast than a bowl of cold cereal.

Live From the Artists’ Den
Tori Amos
The Veterans Room of New York City’s Park Avenue Armory set the stage for a private concert by Tori Amos for 100 lucky fans. Described as “Greek, Moresque, and Celtic with a dash of the Egyptian, the Persian, and the Japanese,” the room provided a fitting setting for one of the most eclectic and culturally curious artists in music today. Amos performed a career-spanning set featuring classics from her debut Little Earthquakes through to Abnormally Attracted to Sin.

In Performance at the White House: Paul McCartney
President and Mrs. Obama host the concert event in honor of musician Sir Paul McCartney’s receipt of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The evening includes performances by McCartney himself and Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Jonas Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Corinne Bailey Rae, Dave Grohl, Faith Hill, Lang Lang and Jack White, with remarks by Jerry Seinfeld.
